In the afternoon light, I stand by the old oak,
watching their wings beat, the flutter of whispers,
little gatherings, a council of feathers,
chattering in the breeze.

What secrets do they share,
these small, wild thinkers,
in the moments before flight?
Do they ponder the sky,
the warmth of the sun,
or the paths not taken?

They tilt their heads,
eyes wide and bright,
then—like clockwork—their gaze lifts,
all at once, they seem to see something,
an invisible thread pulling their spirits,
though to my eyes, space is empty,
silent, nothing but air.

Is it a distant call?
A promise heard only by them, or the shadow of a thought dancing
on the edge of a breeze?
In their shared silence, there’s a knowing, a wild freedom,
an urge to soar beyond this moment.

I, rooted in my spot,
wonder what they sense,
this bird council, unbound by doubt.
Their freedom whispers in the rustle of leaves,
and I find myself wishing, just once, to grasp that certainty,
to rise up, caught in the wind, to follow the call of whatever it is they see.
